HAL 9000 Homelab

An open-source, privacy-focused smart home system that learns user behavior patterns for energy optimization and personalized experiences, inspired by HAL 9000's predictive capabilities but without the homicidal tendencies.

The HAL 9000 Homelab project aims to create a smart home system that emphasizes local control, data privacy, and predictive automation. Inspired by HAL 9000 from '2001: A Space Odyssey,' the system observes and learns user routines to optimize energy consumption, adjust lighting and temperature, and provide personalized experiences without relying on cloud-based services or data sharing. The core idea is to run a home server (Raspberry Pi or similar) equipped with open-source smart home software like Home Assistant, enhanced with a custom AI/ML module. This module, inspired by the Shrike artificial intelligences in 'Hyperion' (observing, learning, and adapting), would analyze sensor data (motion sensors, temperature sensors, smart plugs, etc.) locally to identify patterns. For example, it could learn that the user turns on the bedroom light and adjusts the thermostat to 70 degrees every night at 10 PM. Based on this, it could proactively adjust these settings before the user even acts. To achieve low cost and niche appeal, the project focuses on providing detailed instructions and scripts for integrating affordable, readily available hardware (e.g., ESP32-based sensors, Zigbee smart plugs) with the custom AI module. Users can contribute their collected data (anonymized) to a federated learning system, allowing the AI model to improve over time without compromising individual privacy. The high earning potential comes from several avenues: (1) Offering pre-configured hardware kits with the system pre-installed. (2) Providing premium support and customization services for users who need assistance with setup and integration. (3) Developing and selling specialized AI models for specific smart home functionalities (e.g., advanced energy optimization, predictive maintenance for appliances). (4) Creating and selling a 'Pro' version with advanced features like voice control, security integrations, and detailed energy reporting. This project taps into the growing demand for privacy-focused smart home solutions and offers a unique combination of AI-powered automation and local control.
